YAAASSSSS I WAS RIIIGGHHTTTT!!!!!!! I knew that Dimmesdale had a major role !!!!!! HAHAAAA He THOUGHT!!! This man ain't low!! HAAAAhaaaaaa.....I can now see why we are made to read this in school and how it fits in with every other story I've read; IT WAS SOOO WACK!! To me it was just your basic love story that makes everyone have to reread the english and in the end upsets you because of how basic it was *cough cough* Shakespeares Stories.
Toward the end, we witness a lot of Pearl and not much Hester. By this I mean, we see Pearl actually develop throughout the story from 0 to hero (kind of/not really)!!! In the beginning Pearl is an "evil baby monster"= Just being a kid yet kind of wild. She then grows a bit but atleast exponentially. Yet, it may have come off as mean how she only recognized her mom when the Scarlet Letter is in place. As we know the Scarlet Letter upset Hester and denounces her soul/character and Pearl seems to show love for it with a kiss. She also pushed away Dimmesdale and rubbed of off the kiss he bestowed on her. But in Pearl's defense you shouldn't expect love or praise from a child who has no clue on who the minister really is. Luckily we see that change in the end! =3 yet as we read that doesnt even matter! ^.^
And that man Chillingworth WHEW!!! Reminds me of Liam Neeson:

That man holds grudges for daayyysssss. Then again he does have a very valid reason. Reverend Dimmesdale just took your girl, had your baby, and now you treat him back to health!?!?! PSHHHT FUDDGEE THAT !!!! I was expecting him to expose him the second he found that letter although they didn't reveal it in that chapter -.-. Or possibly just kill him a lot earlier instead of allowing frkn Nathaniel Hawthorne write this "mASSter piece of literature"
What really pushed me over the limit was truly the ending!! Pearl goes through this whole little coming of age crap and begins to love Dimmesdale! Although I must admit he gives an electrifying sermon, he dies really !!!??? He gose to the scaffold, rips his shirt off showing his letter and then just dies !!??? Drops to the floor the end !!!??? PURE WASTE OF TIME AND TOTAL RUBBISH THIS BOOK WAS!!!!!
Congratulations, "Professor" Paul, you were right. That being said, I agree that this so-called "masterpiece of literature" could've been written better, definitely with more character development and less useless information. I don't care about angsty preachers, but if you're going to write about them, can they at least have more to them than their incessant whining about their sins, am I right?
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure if you're right. Spacial directions are hard to determine through the web.
DeleteHaha as always love your blog Paul! Very opinionated and all. So, I agree with the ending it was very melodramatic but hey a book can be as dramatic as it wants right? I think when he wrote this he was trying to mimic Shakespeare in a way too because I feel like this would've made a good play, not a classic novel. Buttttt I disagree with you about being a mASSter piece as you put it. It could've been better written, but isn't that what we're supposed to learn? You read stories from the "greats' left behind and you learn how to be better than them when writing. Anyways just my opinion on things ^-^
ReplyDeleteI always end up dying when I read your blog posts haha. But I basically had the same reaction as you. I agree with you when you say that the ending could have been better. There were so many questions left unanswered. I also felt it to be unnecessarily dramatic. Dimmesdale really had to be killed off through a big scene? The ending just didn't make sense to me. The novel would have been so much better if it ended differently.
ReplyDeleteI agree! I hate that he just died in the end, it was stupid and pointless. Thgrough this book I was basically thinking ok, thats ok, well this book could be worse, ehhh alright...and then the ending roles around and I'm just like no....just stop please rewrite this book's ending because I am over this! But Hawthorne can do as he wishes since it is his book...Can we burn the last few chapters please? :) btw I love the picture and video!!!
ReplyDeleteI don't seem to share the same content others have for the ending. At least at the moment of dimmesdale's death he stops complaining and being a wuss about things.
ReplyDeleteTo those that are saying it was dramatic, that's how some people's lives are.
Paul, excellent analysis (and very funny!). Do you think that Dimmesdale should have lived and had a happy life with Pearl after she shouldered the blame publicly for all of those years and he suffered silently? Was he worthy of her love? Of Pearl's love?
ReplyDeleteI agree, I didn't like that he died at the end. He never had to live through the embarrassment and humiliation Hester did. Though the truth did come out and it surely altered people's opinions of him, he never had to deal with being the talk of the talk of the town and whatnot.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you with what everything you said. Pearl was right to wash of the kiss the reverend put on her. He doesn't deserve her if he is not willing to show her as his child in public. Also, if Chillingworth had a problem with Dimmesdale he should have taken care of that problem sooner. Meaning Chillingworth had a chance to kill Dimmesdale but didn't.
ReplyDeleteWhy is it the more and more i read these analysis' the one thing i find in common, is that this so called master piece of literature that we have to read because it's so great is receiving such negative feedback. Why you ask? BECAUSE IT IS IRRELEVANT. Now thing about this, if this happened today in this society, would this much happen because of it, no it wouldnt. Im not saying it it because we are better or anything, in fact people would argue the complete opposite, but i digress. Time's change, and what was relevant even 20 years ago, may no longer pertain to us as of now.
